The Mission Order of Malta - Permanent Observer Mission

The Mission

The Permanent Mission of the Sovereign Order of Malta is the government’s representation at the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) and the Order’s official link to the international diplomatic community at the Vienna International Center (VIC).

Accredited to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), the Mission’s broad spectrum and wide sphere of professional activities gives the Order the opportunity to regularly interact with many states and organizations around the globe on the highest diplomatic level.

In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly granted the Order the status of Permanent Observer. Resolution A/RES/48/265 emphasizes „the long standing dedication of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta in providing humanitarian assistance and its special role in international humanitarian relations“.

The main purpose of the Order’s multilateral diplomacy is to strengthen and develop relations with other states, international and intergovernmental organizations, to inform them about its activities and to define possible fields of cooperation and partnership.

The presence of the Order at numerous international conferences and meetings and its active contribution in fields such as emergency humanitarian relief, leprosy, AIDS, anti-personnel mines and disarmament illustrate the Order’s role within the community of nations.

The Order is represented in a wide spectrum of international bodies at ambassadorial level, either by Permanent Observers or by Official Representatives.
