Since 1968, the United Nations and other International Organisations have hosted the Inter-Agency Games – the international sporting event for the staff, diplomats and family members of the global United Nations network. Over the years, the Games have developed from 5 disciplines and some 300 participants to 13 disciplines and more than a Thousand participants from all 5 continents. It is the purpose of these Games to enable the staff members of the Agencies and organisations of the United Nations family to get to know each other through sports meetings and thereby to improve mutual understanding and strengthen working relations.

This year’s games were organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) staff association and were taking place from 3rd – 7th May 2017 in and around one of the four worldwide headquarters of the United Nations, in Vienna, Austria.

With the comprehensive support of the Permanent Mission of the Sovereign Order of Malta, and for the very first time, the Order was charged with taking care of all healthcare requirements during this year’s Games. Thus, the Order of Malta deployed several emergency medical response teams (EMRT) and ambulances from Austria, to take care of the medical needs of all sports participants, UN staff, guests and visitors at the venues.

“It is a great pleasure and an honour for us, to be able to actively contribute to this internationally renowned sports event which, among other sportive goals, promotes peace and common values among people from all walks of life,” Professor Günther Granser outlined, the Order’s ambassador to the United Nations Office at Vienna, while meeting with H.E. Mr. Yukiya Amano, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, during the opening ceremony of the Inter-Agency Games. “The Order’s substantial presence at these Games also allows us to call positive attention to the Order of Malta’s worldwide efforts, works, and humanitarian undertakings,” Ambassador Granser noted.
