State Visit of His Most Eminent Highness the Prince and Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing at UN Headquarters Vienna

H.M.E.H. Fra’ Matthew Festing with the highest government members arrived at the UN Plaza and were received with honours by the UN Security and Safety Forces. The UNOV Director General and UNODC Executive Director, Yury Fedotov welcomed H.M.E.H. and the delegation of the Order upon arrival at the UN Plaza and accompanied the delegation personally to the UNODC headquarters.

UNODC

During the bilateral meeting with UNODC issues of common interest were covered including human trafficking and migrant smuggling, anti-corruption measures, HIV/AIDS, social issues surrounding violence against women and prevention and treatment of drug abuse among youth.

Mr. Fedotov expressed an invitation to join the campaign End Human Trafficking Now (EHTN) by attending a high level event in New York on 23 March 2012.

Furthermore he expressed gratitude for the support received by the Order in initiating a partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers which led to a publication on good practices in corporate anti-corruption.

The activities of Myanmar of UNODC were discussed and a potential common working area on Human Trafficking, Drugs and alternative cultivations was mentioned.

Common areas of future work were screened for Africa and Latin America as well.

In order to underline these common undertakings the Grand Chancellor Jean Pierre Mazery signed a Joint Statement between the Order and UNODC. This closer cooperation should give more visibility to the UNODC campaigns to prevent human trafficking, drug abuse and corruption.

It was also mentioned that the same concerns about transnational issues are shared between the Order and UNODC and that partnerships with faith-based organizations are an important part of UNODC’s work in a community-driven approach to handle world wide threatening concerns.

A commemorative medal of the Order was presented to Director General Yury Fedotov at the end of the official visit.
